Stocking Your Car for Winter

Stocking Your Car for Winter

It's that time of year again. The leaves are starting to fall, which means the colder snowy days are coming. So lets make sure your car has everything you need in case of an emergence. My mom always told me it's better to be over-prepared than under! So throw these few items in your trunk, and you'll be better prepared for almost anything the winter road sends your way!

Portable Cell Phone Chargers

It's safe to say most people have phone charging cable in their car. But it's not a bad idea to have a power bank in your car for those emergencies. For example, in the situation where you're unable to start your car, a phone charger  that plugs into your car's USB port or cigarette lighter won't do any good. But, on the other hand, a portable battery will charger your phone on the go, wherever you go, regardless of whether or not your car starts. Tip, a lot of these power banks can jump-start vehicles, too, just another reason to keep one in your car.

Ice Scraper and Snow Shovel

Everyone who has lived through a Richmond winter know an ice scraper is vital. Every time you leave your car outside for an extended period of time, your run the risk of coming back to a car that's frosted over with a frustrating layer of snow or ice. So keep an ice scraper with a long handle in your car so you can easily clear off your windows, mirrors, and lights before driving.

Kitty Litter or Bags of Sand

Having a bag of sand or kitty litter in your car will be helpful in a few ways.  First, the added weight in the trunk can help with traction if your car is rear-wheel. Plus, if you get stuck on a slippery surface, you can pour it around your tires. It provides that extra grit your tires need to gain traction and get you moving. If you find yourself stuck without either of these, you can use your floor mats in a pinch.

First Aid Kit

An emergency is never planned! It is always a good idea to have a first aid kit in your car from those times. Your kit should contain some bandages, adhesive tape, antibiotic ointment, scissors, gauze, and any medications you may need.

Flashlights are useful for many different reasons. The first being that they can be used to notice oncoming travelers if you are on the side of the road, digging around in the trunk after dark, or dealing with problems under the hood. Lastly, if you have to walk somewhere at night, it would be nice to see where you are going.
