If you love Mazda history as much as we do at Pearson Mazda, you’ve probably experienced (or longed to experience) the smooth drive of the classic Wankel rotary engine firsthand. A Mazda MX-5 Miata powered by the rotary engine is a long-held dream of Mazda fans, but the Mazda MX-5 Miata rotary engine model never made it to the lineup. Find out what made this engine so famous — and experience all of the benefits with a modern Skyactiv®-G engine.

What Was the Wankel Rotary Engine?

Mazda designers have always taken pride in doing things a little differently, and the Wankel rotary engine was a great example of what made these models stand out. This early engine had an incredible power-to-weight ratio, so it was ideal for drivers looking for light, aggressive cars. Since the 2012 Mazda RX-8 went off the market, though, it hasn’t been included in new Mazda cars.

Was There Ever a MAZDA MX-5 MIATA Rotary Engine Model?

Since the rotary engine was famous for its lightweight and heavy performance, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata has always been known for its roadster drive, the two seem like a natural match. However, from the first generation — the 1990 Mazda MX-5 — it has always been powered by a traditional engine. From the 1.6-liter engine that powered the first model to the Skyactiv®-G system in modern models, this cruiser never used a rotary engine.

What Engine Powers the 2025 MAZDA MX-5 Miata?

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata uses a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, giving it up to 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Combined with available performance upgrades like an asymmetric limited-slip differential, that gives this coupe plenty of power. With a design for a relaxing weekend cruise, this drive is just as smooth as the classic Mazda models with a rotary engine under the hood.
