2017 Mazda CX-5 driving in the city

From its addition to the lineup in 2012, the Mazda CX-5 has held a key place in the Mazda lineup. While it wasn’t the first crossover SUV Mazda built, it did point the way forward for modern Mazda vehicles, with a number of cutting-edge features still present today. Learn more about the history of this classic Mazda SUV below — and get ready for the next generation at Pearson Mazda.

The First Generation

When the 2013 Mazda CX-5 arrived on the scene, it was the first model to show off the SKYACTIV®-G powertrains that power modern Mazda SUVs. It was also the first model to be inspired by the Kodo design philosophy, emphasizing simplicity and driving focus over flashy features. From the beginning, it was also highlighted as an exceptionally safe model, winning Top Safety Pick awards from the IIHS.

The Second Generation

The revamped 2017 Mazda CX-5 pushed this popular crossover even further, emphasizing the low, wide stance the model is known for. Underneath the hood, there was also a major performance upgrade, with the available 250-horsepower powertrain blowing the 155-horsepower first generation out of the water. The last major addition also made it even more capable: standard i-Activ® all-wheel drive, introduced in 2022.

The Future

The third generation of the Mazda CX-5 is arriving later this year, pushing this classic crossover SUV even further into the future. The wheelbase has been lengthened by 4.5 inches, dramatically increasing the cargo space for your next adventure. Plus, with the available 15.6-inch touchscreen, the largest on any Mazda model, staying connected is easier than ever.
