One of the many reasons why people love Mazda models is they don’t typically require a lot of maintenance. With routine service, your Mazda CX-5 can stay in great shape for many years, but does this need to involve replacing the Mazda CX-5 timing belt or chain? Pearson Mazda goes over what you need to know.

No Timing Belt

The first thing to know about your Mazda CX-5 is that it doesn’t contain a timing belt. Instead, it uses a metal timing chain. This connects the crankshaft and pistons to the camshaft and valves in the engine. Its job is to ensure that the valves open and close atg the right times during the engine’s four-stroke cycle.

Replacing a Timing Chain

When everything works properly, you should never have to worry about the timing chain in your Mazda CX-5, as it’s designed to last for the life of the vehicle. Sometimes, however, they do require service, and a warning sign is a rattling from the engine. In certain instances, a timing chain can be stretched or have its tensioners worn down, in which case it would need to be replaced.

A Different Belt to Pay Attention To

While your Mazda CX-5 doesn’t have a timing belt, it does have a serpentine belt. This is instrumental in transferring engine power to key components like the alternator and the air conditioning. Because this belt is made of rubber, it may at some point need to be replaced. It’s a smart idea to have this looked at periodically so you know what kind of condition it’s in.
