City Driving Tips

City Driving Tips

Brought to you by Pearson Mazda

There are a ton of elements that drivers have to deal with when they travel in the city. The noise of the taxis, tons of cyclists, and other drivers are all enough to drive people up a wall when traveling in the city. Driving around cities like Richmond can be a little stressful, especially if you have to do it five days a week.   We here at Pearson Mazda want to help you navigate the city a little bit easier by providing you with some helpful tips. If you need service on your vehicle or are looking for a new vehicle equipped to drive around the city, be sure to stop by Pearson Mazda and let our experts help you out!

Plan Accordingly

Cities are incredibly congested places, and it can get extremely overwhelming when it comes to navigating in the land of concrete. All drivers are trying to get to where they need to go as quickly as possible, and those who live in the city aren't going to be the most helpful or forgiving person in the world. Having a navigation system will certainly help, but you're going to want to plan out alternate routes before leaving the house. It will avoid you having to fiddle with the navigation system while in traffic. Be sure to keep an eye on traffic reports, and even if the roads appear to be clear, be sure to leave yourself enough time.

Use Your Mirrors

You should always check your mirrors regularly, but this is especially true when you drive in the city. It's also important to make your intentions clear when your driving in the city. The things we learned in driver's ed, such as the mirror signal, certainly come in handy in large areas. While you might be able to get away with a minor mistake in a rural area when you are swarmed by 50 cars and around 100 passengers, it's not so easy to correct. Things like changing lanes without signaling or pulling away without checking your blind spot are hazardous during rush hour. Make sure you're always checking for cars and other people.

Look Out For Roadsigns

Your driving is heavily scrutinized when it comes to city driving, and if you're driving in a bus lane during times when that frowned upon or pushed the pedal down during rush hour traffic, you are absolutely going to get caught. If you're used to driving in rural areas where certain lane markings and signs are non-existent, there is a chance that you probably got used to bending the rules a little bit. This is not going to happen in the city! Don't risk pushing the boundaries, and always keep your eyes open.

Keep Some Change

Trust us when we tell you that keeping some spare change in your pocket could turn out to be a lifesaver. Parking in the city can be scarce, and it can often be expensive if you find a spot. There is nothing worse than finally reaching your destination and realizing that there is no place to park. What worse is that you could go to use your debit card and realize that the parking lot only takes quarters. If you haven't factored in finding a parking space, you're going to want to find a space somewhere and then hoof it to your location. This means that you're at the mercy of the parking meter, which is stress that no one needs.

Avoid Distractions

This city is noisy and full of distractions. Things like buses, trains, demonstrations, and dogs can all be distractions when driving in the city. While it can be tempting to take your eyes off the road, it's also one of the worst times to do so. As hard as it is to avoid distractions, you need to focus on what you and other drivers are doing. Calling someone because you have crashed your car while looking at some flash mob will not be a fun time.
