Every 2021 MAZDA Vehicle Tested Earns Top Safety Award

The Folks at Pearson Mazda Explain the Importance of this Award

On Feb. 24, 2021, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced the winners of its highest award in safety, the 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+. All tested Mazda vehicles made the list for the second year in a row. This includes the Mazda3, Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-3, CX-30, CX-5, and CX-9.

What is the IIHS?

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries, and property damage from motor vehicle crashes.

An agency of the IIHS, The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) shares scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model.

What testing was undertaken for the 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award?

To qualify for the 2021 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, Mazda vehicles earned excellent ratings in each of the Institute's six crashworthiness evaluations:
  • Moderate overlap front
  • Driver-side small overlap
  • Passenger-side small overlap, front
  • Passenger-side small overlap, side
  • Roof strength
  • Head restraint
Mazda vehicles also earned advanced or superior ratings for front crash prevention in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. Much of this result was due to mitigation as a result of Mazda's i-Activsense technology.

What is Mazda's i-Activsense technology?

Mazda's i-Activsense is an umbrella term covering a series of advanced safety technologies which make use of detection devices such as milliwave radars and cameras. i-Activsense includes active safety technologies that support safer driving by helping the driver to avert collisions, or reduce their severity, in situations where they cannot be avoided.

Mazda's i-Activsense advanced safety technologies include Advanced Smart City Brake Support with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning, Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function, Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning System with Lane-Keep Assist, Driver Attention Alert, High Beam Control, Adaptive Front-Lighting System, and Traffic Sign Recognition.
