Get yourself a new Mazda at Pearson Mazda
Have you ever thought about the different ways your Mazda makes you feel under the hood or otherwise? Mazda doesn't believe that your vehicle should be considered as a piece of scrap metal that you go from point A to point B in. Instead, it should make your heart race whenever you sit behind the wheel. That has always been Mazda's goal to make cars that matter. That's why every Mazda, since its inception, has been designed to inspire, excite, and bring joy. Mazda's craftsmen have been detail-oriented engineers who want to bring you a new experience every time you drive, and that has been true since the inspection of its rotary engine. Below we get into more of the history of the Mazda rotary engine and once you are done reading, be sure to check out our complete Mazda inventory!
The Human Touch
The home city of Mazda is Hiroshima, known for its challenger spirit. The people of Hiroshima built their city from the ground up, and that strength pushed the people at Mazda to prevail against any and all odds. It inspires the automaker to be more agile, strategic, and creative. That creativity ultimately led Mazda to mass-produce the rotary engine to win the 24 hours of Le Mans when nobody outside the company believed they could. All of that quiet confidence is what continues to fuel the company to continue to challenge the status quo each and every day.
The Birth of the Rotary Engine
Mazda set out to create the perfect rotary engine in 1961 when it was just thought of as a pipe dream for most automakers. The engineers with the automaker continued to fight through several setbacks, which included chatter marks on the inner wall of the rotor housing. Ultimately, they were able to overcome what was referred to as the "nail marks of the devil" with high-strength carbon-infused seals. All of this labor of love paid off when the Cosmo Sport was introduced, the world's first volume production sports car powered by a rotary engine.
Birth of Iconic Miata
Because Mazda dares to be different, their passionate engineers created something new at a time when the lightweight sports car segment was all but extinct. Lead developer Kenichi Yamamoto engineered the first generation Mazda MX-5 Miata in 1989, and it's still going strong today. Yamamoto and his team had one mission, to build a lightweight sports car that was nothing but pure joy to drive. The team stopped at nothing to reach this goal, as they even incurred extra costs so they could achieve all of the agility they were after. In the end, the results speak for themselves as they created a fan favorite, as there are more than a million Miatas on the road today.
Skyactiv Technology and the Future
Mazda believes all its vehicles should be engineered to maximize driving dynamics and efficiency, from body construction to engine technology and chassis and transmission. That's why they developed the innovative Mazda Skyactive technology, which gives its drivers the most out of every mile while never compromising on performance. It is just another innovation that Mazda delivers to make driving that much better. One question that every designer asks themselves is, where do we go from here? Mazda believes that anything is possible, and they have shown that they have the power to create true works of art, which include the Takeri, Shinari, or Mazda's latest vehicle, the RX-Vision. While these vehicles are currently unavailable for purchase, they symbolize their evolving design.
