With Mazda set to release a ton of new SUVs in the 2024 model year, the automaker is putting its best foot forward with the release of the 2024 Mazda CX-90! Under the Hood of the CX-90
There are three new engine options for the CX-90, all potent hybrids capable of traveling long distances. The first engine we need to tell you about is the turbocharged 3.3-inline six-cylinder which adds a mild hybrid assist. This is referred to as the 3.3 Turbo, and it can produce a whopping 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. If this is not enough power, check out the 3.3 Turbo S, which ups the horsepower to 349 and the torque to 369 lb-ft when you use premium gasoline. Either way, this is a massive power upgrade, and these engines help to improve the smoothness as you accelerate while also giving you a slight improvement in fuel economy. Mazda's First PHEV
The final engine in the CX-90s lineup is the first PHEV Mazda offers in the United States. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and it pairs with an electric motor, and the combination provides drivers with a stark 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. A 17.8-kWh battery pack powers the electric motor, giving you a ton of all-electric range. Charging the batter from 0 to 100% will take a couple of hours when you use a 240-volt battery source. No matter which of these engines you go with, you get a standard all-wheel-drive and eight-speed automatic transmission. Towing for the CX-90 is impressive for the class, as it can haul between 3,500 pounds and 5,000 pounds.
How the CX-90 Drives
The CX-90 comes with one of the planet's most taut and responsive accelerations. The Turbo 3.3 S, for example, exhibits outstanding body control without the need to be stiff or unnecessarily busy. The fluid body motion makes for some incredible highway stability. Three drive modes are available for the CX-90 to help you go over any terrain, whether parking in a parking space or driving down a long, twisty road. When you push down on the accelerator, the CX-90 can confidently reach highway speeds. None of these engines feel underpowered, especially the PHEV, as when you combine it with the battery pack, it will cruise effortlessly at highway speeds. If you go with the six-cylinder, you can merge or pass other vehicles effortlessly.
